What does it mean to address nutrition as a basic need?

Proper nutrition, nutrition counseling, and nutrition education are strengths that contribute to aging well. If older adults are not getting proper nutrition, they are at risk for premature institutionalization and death. Proper nutrition is also necessary for medications to work as prescribed and for the body and brain to function well.

Addressing Basic Needs - Nutrition Goals

2008-2009 Priorities:

Everyone has enough to eat.
>Make senior meal programs available countywide, focusing efforts on those in greatest need.
>Educate people of all ages about healthy food choices.

  • 884,520 meals needed for 810 people who found getting food a challenge
  • Food should be medicine!
  • Outreach – let people know what nutrition resources are available
    (eg. Let’s Eat! directory)
  • Community events and partnerships with other community nutrition providers
